Hold on, let me try to, um, wrap my head around this. So, Microsoft came out on Wednesday — yes, a Wednesday, not that it matters, but somehow it feels like it does — and dropped some numbers for FY23 Q3. Okay, officially they said gaming revenue was up by 5% year-over-year, which is decent, right? Not blowing the roof off, but hey, growth is growth.
Now, about Xbox and all those gamey things. They saw an 8% bump, mainly thanks to Call of Duty and Minecraft. Seriously, those games have been around forever. It’s wild. Oh, and Xbox Game Pass is doing its thing, growing too. But, hardware? Nope, that went down by 6%. Why? Maybe folks are just tired of buying new boxes. Or maybe they lost their charging cables. Who knows.
In the last quarter — or wait, was it this one? Anyway, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 showed up and people just can’t get enough of those mind-bending microtransactions. Talk about virtual shopping sprees, right?
Oh, and while we’re at it, there’s this game called Avowed, from Obsidian Entertainment. Kind of a fantasy-escape thingy. It’s set in Eora. Does that ring a bell? If you’re familiar with Pillars of Eternity, you’d know what I’m talking about. Sort of. It launched — or was that something else? My brain’s a bit scrambled between all these releases.
And yeah, this isn’t over or anything. They say more details are developing or whatever. But for now, pass the controller. Or the popcorn. Whichever.
