Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X PCs have been boosted with a fresh ally: Google Drive for Desktop is now officially compatible. After a brief beta phase launched in November 2024, Google has finally rolled out the Arm64 version of the app for broad public use.
Google announced on its blog that the prominent cloud storage service, much like Microsoft’s OneDrive, is now open for download. This applies to Google Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers, and anyone with a personal Google account.
Although the app is available starting today, don’t be surprised if it doesn’t appear instantly. There’s a gradual rollout in place, which might take up to two weeks. If you were part of the Google Drive (Arm64) beta test, you’re in luck—you’ll be automatically updated to the full release. All you need is to head over to Google’s Drive page to snag the app for your Qualcomm-powered laptop.
This release is a game changer for many. While Qualcomm and tech partners have ensured almost all popular apps are Arm64-ready on Snapdragon X PCs, Google’s Drive app was a notable holdout. Its absence was a hurdle for businesses where cloud access via Google Workspace is crucial.
The beta version was promising but limited to those who knew to look for it. It wasn’t exactly front and center without some savvy Googling or reading tech articles.
For those unfamiliar, Google Drive offers a robust platform for stashing files, documents, photos, and videos, providing access from any internet-connected device. Here are some standout features:
- Storage Options: Enjoy 15 GB of free storage across Google Drive, Gmail, and Photos, with options to expand through Google One plans.
- Collaboration Tools: Seamlessly integrated with Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides for teamwork in real-time.
- Easy Sharing: Share files and folders effortlessly via links or direct permissions.
- Automatic Backup: Ensures safety with automatic backup for files and folders.
With this update, the appeal of switching to a Qualcomm-enabled Windows laptop just climbed. In our experience, these laptops often eclipse Intel in power efficiency and price.
Other notable Arm64-compatible apps recently added include Telegram, Vivaldi browser, Davinci Resolve, Adobe Illustrator, and Slack. For a more comprehensive list, check out our recommendations for the best Windows on Arm apps.
Qualcomm keeps a handy reference of major apps ready for Arm64, emphasizing that "Based on research from Microsoft, 90% of the app time people spend today has native versions." While a few exceptions might exist, Snapdragon X PC users should largely be content in 2025.
On another note, Qualcomm has introduced a beta program for graphics drivers on its Snapdragon X Elite laptops. This allows users to download enhanced drivers that support more games, address current game issues, and generally improve performance. These improvements will eventually reach everyone via Windows Update, but if you prefer immediate upgrades, it’s worth enrolling in the program.
