You know, there’s this new thing happening with Lyrical Media. They’ve decided to kick off their own indie game publishing gig. Like, for real, they even went and called it Lyrical Games. Not super creative in terms of naming, but hey, it works. Anyway, heading this whole shindig is someone named Blake Rochkind. Now, Blake used to be the big cheese over at Private Division, doing the whole business development thing. So, this isn’t their first rodeo.
What’s interesting, though, is they’ve roped in folks from places like Devolver, Humble, and Microsoft. Pretty solid team, right? They’ve already got three games ready to spill the beans on real soon. And get this, one of those games is by the people who did Homeworld 3 — Blackbird Interactive. Kind of exciting, right?
So, I stumbled over this quote from Blake (yeah, we’re on a first-name basis in my mind). They’re all about letting developers call the shots on their own games. Blake’s like, with so much chaos out there, maybe devs don’t actually need a publisher. But, they want to be the publisher that makes sense. You know, the type developers actually want to work with. Makes me wonder how that works in practice. But that’s a rabbit hole for another day.
Oh, and Blake was going on about some “new normal” business. Kind of buzzword-y if you ask me, but the gist was clear. They’re all about everyone having a say from the get-go, which is, well, refreshing in a “we’re all in this together” sort of way. They seem pretty convinced they’re offering killer deals in the indie space. “Triple-i” I think was the word. Yeah, that’s a thing now. Who knew?
Moreover, this whole drama of keeping developers in control of their IPs — that’s a biggie. I mean, ownership is everything, right? Oh, and they harp on about collaboration and transparency — buzzwords, but still comforting in that ‘you’ve got a friend here’ kind of way. Anyway — okay, where was I going with this? Ah, forgetting is human, I guess.
