Oh man, where to start? So, GPD was all “Hey, here’s our new toy!” back in July with this AMD Strix Halo handheld gizmo. They made a big deal at ChinaJoy in Shanghai. Honestly, I was like, “Do we really need another gadget?” But then, apparently some folks in China got their hands on it and couldn’t wait to show it off. So, this guy, Jobs_Bao—talk about a name, right?—he’s out there running these benchmarks on the thing. Cinebench R23? Time Spy? Like, isn’t that just tech mumbo jumbo? Who even decides these names?
Anyway, this handheld got a whopping 30,495 points on whatever-test-that-was. Seems like it could almost keep up with some big shot Intel Core thingy — I9-13900HX, or whatever. Someone told me it’s desktop-level performance, I guess. Here’s the wild part though, Max temp hits just 80.3 degrees Celsius, you’d think it’d fry up like yesterday’s leftovers. But no, it just keeps on going, fans at 95dB—loud enough to annoy the neighbors but hey, what can you do?
Oh, but graphics! Man, nearly hit the RTX 4060 record with 9,680 points. Don’t ask me what that means. AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 is running at 70 watts when it could hit 120. It’s like having a sports car and driving it at a snail’s pace. Yet, folks are playing Black Myth: Wukong on it, racking up 80 FPS. Go figure.
Now here’s something kinda quirky. The battery. It’s a 5,170mAh chunk—not glued in. You can yank it off and on the handheld like some fancy Lego piece. Adds a bit of weight—340 grams-ish. Brings some balance to the Force, or your grip, or… you get the picture.
People act shocked by this design. Why? No clue. But swap the battery on the go and you’re all set, so I guess there’s a win? Plus, there’s this ginormous 180-watt charger brick if you’re feeling lazy.
Two versions of this gadget: one beefy with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 and Radeon 8060S jammed in there, packing 128GB of memory. Other? Not as fancy, Ryzen AI Max 385 with Radeon 8050S. Price tag? Total mystery to everyone, including me.
