Oh man, where do I even start with this? Okay, so you know that game Lost in Random from 2021? Yeah, it wasn’t really a roguelike, but apparently, the folks who worked on it thought, “Hey, why not?” They figured the wacky world they created – with all the dice stuff – would be perfect for something fast-paced and combat-heavy. Maybe they were onto something. Or maybe not. Who knows.
Anyway, I chatted with Martin Storm, the director of this new twist, Lost in Random: The Eternal Die. He was super chill about it and said the whole idea kinda began like, “Lost in Random being a roguelike? Sure, why not continue the IP with a fun twist?” And just like that, boom, a new game was born. I mean, kind of.
So here’s the deal with The Eternal Die. You get to step into the shoes—or, I guess, mask—of the original baddie, Queen Aleksandra. Sounds wild, right? Aleks and her dice buddy, Fortune, are navigating these crazy-changing levels, trying to bust out of some mega-powerful artifact trap thing. I imagine it’s like rolling dice but with way more stress.
Storm was going on about how the randomness of dice just fits with the whole roguelite vibe. They started off really tiny as a team, just a handful of folks tinkering away—nothing big. It’s all combat this, gameplay that, in the weird Lost in Random world. Sounds like chaos, but I bet it’s fun chaos.
Then there’s this comparison to Hades. If you’ve played that, you know what I’m talking about. The Eternal Die draws a bunch from Hades (big love to Supergiant Games there) with its intense fights mixed with story bits popping up before you hit the boss or between runs. Storm was all like, “Hades inspired us,” and dude was genuinely pumped about it. Who can blame him? Hades kind of flipped the script on how roguelikes can roll with awesome narratives and gameplay.
And here’s a bit of trivia for ya: Stormteller Games is cooking this one up, not the same devs as Lost in Random but close enough. About half are OGs from the first game, which sorta keeps that quirky, oddball essence intact. Storm even said having those folks jump in again helped keep the soul of the game right. They know the Lost in Random universe like it’s their backyard. That’s gotta count for something.
So, what’s up next for Lost in Random? Storm was pretty tight-lipped. He did spill that new stuff’s coming to The Eternal Die eventually, but he played coy on the deets. Just something vague like, “We’re on it, stay tuned.” Guess we’ll just have to hold our horses on that one.
And that’s it—a real mixed bag of ideas, development stories, and game vibes. Now I’m off to do… something else.
